Well, I think your question is a bit abstract. Gearman itself adds a little overhead, most of it inherited from the network. But it is on your hand add overhead or avoid it.
Other than that, Gearman is very popular among huge web-sites, for instance Digg has 45+ servers and they run 400K jobs/days and Yahoo has 60+ servers and they run 6Mjobs/day (http://www.scribd.com/doc/12832479/Gearman-MySQL)
